When I first got into sales and spent all my time doing cold outbound - this is the image I had in my head. Me and my old man were there that night. IYKYK - If you dont, let me explain:1918 to 2004. Boston Red Sox = ZERO world series. Lovable losers of Major League Baseball. Us fans were angry people with little hope - passed down from our parents and grandparents.10/17/04 - it all changed - starting with ONE SMALL ACTION. Before that action, it was more of the same. Down 3-0 in the ALCS to the evil empire (Yankees), facing elimination. Our bud lights were the usual bury your tears beers. But then...Roberts pinch runs for Millar, takes a lead, and steals second on Rivera (not easy). That 4 seconds, changed the history of one of the oldest teams, cities, and sports curses in the US. Roberts scores on a Mueller single, Sox win in extra - take 3 more games then win the World Series for the first time in 86 years. What's that have to do with cold calling or outbound? Do the math. I've been in sales 16 years, as an individual contributor and a leader. But I've always been very aware of the importance of that first action. I've seen literally HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars in revenue be celebrated with a bell ring and a seller getting credit, like Big Papi and Schilling in '04. But almost every single one of those revenue dollars, started with a small action by a brave BDR. A google search, some creative research and preparation - then the dial of 10 numbers or the swift hit of a send button on an email or DM. So remember that, because that first year or two where you dont get to be Papi, Manny, or Schilling is tough - but you're still a hero for anyone who actually gets how this whole thing works.
