As television’s #1 drama, Yellowstone has become quite the fan-favorite. From sensational acting to beautiful scenery, it constantly delivers.
Conflicts consistently occur along the shared borders of Yellowstone Dutton ranch, an Indian reservation, and land developers, some of which turn deadly.
Though fan favorites such as John, Beth, and Rip may be safe for now, there has been a fair share of Yellowstone characters who have died so far.
So, who all has died in Yellowstone?
Prominent Yellowstone characters that have died so far include Lee Dutton, Roarke Morris, Sarah Nguyen, Dirk Hurdstram, Robert Long, Dan Jenkins, and Garret Randall. Other deaths on the show include Fred Myers, Patrick Monieth, Teal Beck, Malcolm Beck, Jason, Ray, Blake, Carter Meads, Luke Hayes, Torry, Wade Morrow, Clint Morrow, Chester Spears, and Donnie Haskell.
Yellowstone Season 1 Deaths
In season 1 of Yellowstone, we saw the deaths of Lee Dutton, Robert Long, Samantha Long, Fred Myers, and Patrick Monteith. The death of Lee Dutton, John Dutton’s oldest son is perhaps one of the most tragic deaths of the entire show.
Lee Dutton
Lee Dutton is the son of John Dutton and brother to Kayce, Jamie, and Beth. He worked as the head of security at Yellowstone Dutton Ranch and was a sworn agent of the Montana Livestock Commission.
In season 1, episode 1 ‘Daybreak’, Lee set out to retake cattle taken from Yellowstone Dutton Ranch’s property. Gun crossfire breaks out and while in an angry state Robert Long shoots Lee. Despite Kayce’s attempt to save his brother, Lee succumbs to his injuries.
Robert Long
Robert Long is the brother of Monica Dutton and brother-in-law of Kayce Dutton. Robert was an Army veteran and a member of the Broken Rock Reservation.
While attempting to protect cattle alongside the Broken Rock Reservation police from John Dutton and the Montana Livestock Commission, a fight breaks out.
Robert reacts in retaliation, shooting and killing Lee Dutton. In response to his brother being shot, Kayce shoots and kills Robert in season 1, episode 1 “Daybreak.”
Samantha Long
Samantha Long is the wife of Robert Long and sister-in-law to Monica and Kayce Dutton. She and Robert had three children together.
After tragically losing her husband, Samantha realizes that she is not able to take care of her three children. She takes her own life inside her trailer in season 1, episode 3 “No Good Horses.”
Fred Myers
Fred Myers worked as a ranch hand at Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Fred’s fiery attitude caused him to constantly butt heads with fellow ranch hand Jimmy Hurdstram.
After driving Rip Wheeler crazy with his nonsense, Rip attempts to beat some sense into Fred. When Rip next ordered Fred to clean stalls, Fred refused, leading to Rip firing him on the spot.
In season 1, episode 4 “The Long Black Train,” Llyod Pierce drives the fired employee off of the property. However, Fred continues to insult John Dutton and the ranch. This leads to Lloyd driving Fred to a canyon where he shoots and kills the disgruntled former ranch employee.
Patrick Monteith
Patrick Monteith is the medical examiner in Bozeman, Montana, and is a troubled drug addict. He is the doctor who discovered how Robert Long was killed, confirming his death as an execution.
In season 1, episode 2 “Kill the Messenger” Rip Wheeler heads to meet the doctor. In order to protect Kacye and the Dutton’s family name, Rip strangles Patrick after threatening him. The facility then burns down, taking the slain doctor and all the evidence with it.
Yellowstone Season 2 Deaths
In Yellowstone season 2, Dan Jenkins, Teal Beck, Malcolm Beck, Jason, Sarah Nguyen, Dirk Hurdstram, Ray, Blake, Carter Meads, Luke Hayes, and Torry all die. Season 2 is the deadliest season so far to date of the show.
Dan Jenkins
Driven and ambitious, Dan Jenkins worked as a land developer Dan Jenkins for Paradise Valley and sought to build a casino near Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Dan was willing to destroy the Dutton family to get his way.
During his feud with Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, several ranch hands kidnapped Dan and hung him from a tree. However, they let him go, using the hanging as a warning. In season 2, episode 10 “Sins of the Father,” he was killed by a hitman hired by the Beck brothers.
Teal Beck
Businessman Teal Beck and his brother Malcolm joined the real estate game fighting against the Broken Rock Reservation and Paradise Valley. The brothers are displeased with their competition.
Teal met his demise in season 2, episode 10 “Sins of the Father” after taking things too far with the Dutton family. Kayce Dutton shot and killed Teal when he was on the toilet before he could even get up.
Malcolm Beck
Businessman and brother of Teal, Malcolm Beck joins the real estate fight for land in Montana. The scathing Beck brothers are working against Broken Rock Reservation and Paradise Valley.
After taking things too far with the Dutton family, John and his men go after Malcolm to put an end to things. In season 2, episode 10 “Sins of the Father,” Malcolm dies after getting shot by John.
Jason
In season 2, episode 7 “Resurrection Day,” Jason is murdered after a group of masked gunmen invade Beth’s office. Jason worked as Beth’s office assistant at Schwartz & Meyer.
Sarah Nguyen
Sarah Nguyen worked as an undercover journalist for New York Magazine. She went by the alias Kendall.
Not really knowing who she was, Sarah was hired by Christina to do research for Jamie’s campaign. Upon arriving in Montana with her girlfriend Paige Nutter, she infiltrated the campaign to expose the corruption of the Dutton family and their ranch.
Upon learning that it was too late to recant his statement, Jamie assaulted Sarah in season 2, episode 6 “Blood the Boy”. The assault killed Sarah, leading to Jamie and Rip covering up the murder to look like a kayaking accident.
Dirk Hurdstram
Dirk Hurdstram is the grandfather of Jimmy Hurdstram and is Jimmy’s only relative not in jail. In season 2, episode 9 “Enemies by Monday,” Dirk was jumped by Ray and Blake, two men to whom Jimmy owed money. After the assault, Dirk later passed away from a stroke.
Ray
Ray is a meth dealer along with his buddy Blake who used to use Jimmy as a cook. In season 2, episode 9 “Enemies by Monday,” Jimmy sought revenge for his grandpa’s death by blowing up the home Ray and Blake lived in, killing the two.
Blake
Blake is a meth dealer along with his friend Ray. In season 2, episode 9 “Enemies by Monday,” Jimmy sought revenge for his grandpa’s death by blowing up Ray and Blake’s trailer, killing the two.
Carter Meads
Carter Meads is a Neo Nazi with connections to the Montana Free Militia. He is hired along with his girlfriend by the Beck brothers to kidnap Tate Dutton.
After the death of the Beck brothers, Kayce Dutton, Donnie Haskell, and the Sheriff’s Department raided his home, killing him and his girlfriend in season 2, episode 10 “Sins of the Father.”
Luke Hayes
Luke Hayes is the son of rancher Jerry Hayes. Upon his father being arrested by the Montana Livestock Association for killing cattle, Luke pulled out a gun. While Kayce Dutton tried to defuse the situation, Steve Hendon shot and killed Luke in season 2, episode 4 “Only Devils Left.”
Torry
Torry worked as the bodyguard for Dan Jenkins. He was killed in season 2, episode 10 “Sins of the Father,” by a hitman hired by the Beck brothers to kill Dan.
Yellowstone Season 3 Deaths
Yellowstone season 3 saw the deaths of antagonists Wade and Clint Morrow. The father and son duo were arch-enemies with their neighboring ranchers, the Duttons.
Wade Morrow
Wade Morrow is a neighboring rancher to Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. He is an old acquaintance of John Dutton, but the two have now become enemies.
After taking things too far with their rivalry, the ranch hands of Yellowstone Dutton Ranch seek revenge. In season 3, episode 10 “The World is Purple,” John instructs Rip to remove the Yellowstone brand on Wade before the other men hang him.
Clint Morrow
Clint Morrow is the son of Wade Morrow, who ranches next to Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Clint is even more reckless and ill-tempered than his father.
Rip and Clint get into a disagreement when the Morrows run their cattle too close to the Dutton’s cattle. After the Morrows take things too far, the ranch hands of Yellowstone Dutton Ranch chase after Clint on horseback.
Clint rides into the forest and falls off his horse, hitting his head on some rocks and dying immediately in season 3, episode 9 “Meaner Than Evil.”
Yellowstone Season 4 Deaths
Season 4 of Yellowstone saw the deaths of four characters: Roarke Morris, Chester ‘Checkers’ Spears, Garrett Randall, and Donnie Haskell.
Roarke Morris
Roarke Morris is a rancher whose family owns Cross Creek Ranch. He also works for Market Equities, often crossing paths with Beth.
After his hired men, Clint and Wade Morrow take things too far with the Dutton family, Rip seeks revenge. In season 4, episode 1 “Half the Money,” Rip approaches Roarke with a cooler that contains a rattlesnake while he was fishing. The rattlesnake bites Roarke in the face, leading to his gruesome death.
Chester ‘Checkers’ Spears
Chester ‘Checkers’ Spears served in the United States Army, but was dishonorably discharged. He has a long rap sheet of charges against him that include assault and robbery.
Chester brags to Thomas Rainwater that he knows who is behind the attacks on the Dutton and his involvement in putting it together. Upon revealing this information, Thomas and Mo hand him over to the Duttons.
In season 4, episode 3 “All I See Is You,” John challenges Chester to a duel, in which Chester is killed by John Dutton.

Garrett Randall
Garrett Randall is the biological father of Jamie Dutton. He received 30 years in prison after killing his wife Phyllis when Jamie was a young boy.
Upon being released from prison, Garrett issued several attacks on the Dutton family. Beth confronted Jamie and told him that he needs to kill Garrett or he will be killed.
In season 4, episode 10 “Grass on the Streets,” Jamie shoots and kills his biological dad.
Donnie Haskell
Donnie Haskell is a sheriff and fellow acquaintance of John Dutton. In season 4, episode 8 “No Kindness for the Coward,” he got shot after getting caught in the middle of a holdup at a local diner.

Yellowstone Season 5 Deaths
The main character deaths so far in Yellowstone season 5 have been John Dutton IV (Kayce and Monica’s unborn son) and Emmett Walsh.
John Dutton IV
In the opening episode of season 5 we saw Monica Dutton go into labor. With Kayce away working and able to get home in time, Monica drives herself and Tate to the hospital at night.
While driving at night along a long country road, Monica sees a Bison in the road and swerves off the road at the last moment and crashes.
In season 5, episode 1, we see Monica in a hospital and subsequently learn that due to the car crash, she lost her baby boy. It’s only after hearing this we learn the boy was going to be called John Dutton.
Emmett Walsh
In Yellowstone season 5, episode 6, the old cowboy Emmett Walsh dies peacefully in his sleep while out moving a the Ranch cattle herds with the other cowboys.
In a touching moment, John Dutton says “he just died on the trail, like every cowboy dreams it.” Emmett was a well-respected cowboy, so his death was very sad for the Duttons and of course, Emmett’s wife.
