Galaxy Z Flip 6 Latest news

Updated May 23

• Another report claims the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be the only chip Samsung uses in the Galaxy Z Flip 6.
• Regulatory filings tip the Galaxy Z Flip 6 to have a 50MP main camera.
• Samsung may use new glass that makes the crease on the display less visible.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is coming this summer, and Samsung clearly wants to get more people excited about foldable phones as they try to make such devices more mainstream.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 was a welcome improvement over what came before, thanks to a bigger cover display, improved cameras and a sleeker no-gap design. But the battery life wasn't great, and it had stiff competition from the Motorola Razr+.

The rumors are heating up around Samsung's new flip foldable, with early chatter pointing to an even larger cover screen, a more durable foldable display and much more capable main camera. For Samsung, it will need to be a giant leap if it has any chance of taking back the crown.

Here's everything we know so far about the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6. Additionally, we also have a Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs. Galaxy Z Flip 5 preview that analyzes more of the differences between them.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Price and release date

We haven't heard anything about the Z Flip 6 price yet, but the cost will likely be somewhat similar to the release price of the Galaxy Z Flip 5. That phone was released with a full cost of $999 / £1,049. We can imagine that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will cost roughly the same amount.

We have a better idea of a potential release date for the Galaxy Flip 6. The last three Galaxy Flips were released in August, so it is reasonable to imagine the same will be the case for both the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6, this year's expected foldable updates from Samsung.

However, it's thought that launch day could be a bit earlier this year. Rumor has it that Galaxy Unpacked Summer 2024 could take place on July 10, which is slightly earlier than last year. Since Samsung is sponsoring the 2024 Olympic Games, which begins in late July, and having a new device to show off during the games would be a smart move.

It's still unclear when the release date will be, but if past releases are anything to go by we may see it arrive two weeks later — around July 24.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Design

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 should look similar to the prior model, although an uncovered patent filing to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) from Samsung Display, applying to trademark the term “Ironflex.” This could mean something new is coming to the design.

While it is unclear what Ironflex truly is, we'd guess it refers to a hardier foldable screen. One area we know Samsung is looking at is dust resistance. Last July, Samsung's head of mobile TM Roh said that foldable fans will have to “wait a little longer” but that plans are in motion.

A leak from a known source SmartPrix has shown off several high-res renders of the Galaxy Z Flip 6, as well as a 360-degree video. While the phone appears to be very similar to the prior model, there is an increased thickness that could indicate a larger battery. However, there are no indications that the cover screen will be larger.

Samsung may offer the Galaxy Z Flip 6 in light green, light blue, silver and yellow, according to one source. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 was offered in mint green, and a yellow version was offered exclusively through Samsung stores, so we could see some overlap here with the new model and its predecessor.

Another post on X has revealed that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 could have the same Corning Gorilla Armor as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This would afford the device better scratch and glare protection than many of its contemporaries. The leak also mentions a bugger cooling system and the possibility of models running with 12 GB of RAM.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Display

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: All the rumors so far (2)

One of the big things about the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 was the newly enlarged cover display, with screen size increasing to 3.4 inches from the 1.9-inch strip on previous Flips. Recent reports make it sound like the Galaxy Z Flip 6 could take that feature another step further.

According to display analyst Ross Young, Samsung could be aiming to increase the overall size of the outer screen for the Galaxy Flip. This will apparently feature a 3.9-inch exterior display, which is pretty massive compared to other flip foldables. The Z Flip 5 had a 3.4-inch cover screen while the Razr+ offers 3.6 inches.

There's a chance the cover display could be upgraded to a 120Hz refresh rate from the Galaxy Z Flip 5's 60Hz according to one Galaxy Z Flip 6 rumor. This is said to only be in development though, so it's possible we won't see this feature after all if Samsung can't get it finished in time.

As for the interior display, it's likely to be the same 6.7 inches when open, but Samsung has been tipped to use a thicker version of its ultra-thin display glass. The upshot of this move would mean a harder surface and a smaller crease across the interior display.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Cameras

One Galaxy Z Flip 6 camera leak says that Samsung could be working on a prototype of the Flip 6, codenamed B6, and is said to have a 50MP main camera sensor. This would be a big jump up from the 12MP sensor on the current Galaxy Z Flip 5.In April 2023, Twitter leaker @Tech_Reve detailed how the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 could see major changes.

The best proof so far of a camera upgrade for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 comes from regulatory filings linked to the new phone. Those filings indicate a 50MP main camera for the Flip, as previous rumors had predicted.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Performance

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 will likely feature the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip as the Galaxy S24 line, though possibly turning to the Exynos 2400 chip in some markets. That's the strategy Samsung followed with its Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus models, after all.

However, subsequent reports claim that Samsung will exclusively use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the Galaxy Z Flip 6. That should mean not only a performance boost, but also longer battery life, as we've seen a major improvement in endurance across the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus and Galaxy S24 Ultra models using the Snapdragon silicon.

A 12GB RAM option may also be on the cards, but could be limited to certain regions. Otherwise, expect the same 8GB RAM with 256GB or 512GB of storage seen on the Z Flip 5.

A leak poted to X has stated that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 could have a 4,000 mAh battery, which would vastly improve the power levels on the phone. The Z Flip 5 had a 3,700 mAh battery, so there would hopefully be a noticeable upgrade to battery longevity if Samsung did more to this larger cell size.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Outlook

If an early July launch is in the cards for the Galaxy Z Flip 6, we're in home stretch of rumor season for this phone. What we've heard so far sounds promising, particularly when it comes to camera upgrades and a larger exterior display. We'd like to see Samsung add a more powerful zoom, as well as exclusive foldable Galaxy AI features on top of what's avaialable with the S24 series.

We should find out soon enough if we get our wish.

That's great news. I am a senior power user artist illustrator and I fell in love with the Z Flip 5 after 10 years of the Note being my laptop. I do not like the Z Flip because the "micro" form of the Z Flip is way more practical for me but it needs the aforementioned upgrades especially in the camera. As soon as I unpacked the Flip5 last year I knew the future and hoped Samsung would follow though making it the flagship level it deserves and not just a trendy toy. Go for it Samsung and I and the marketplace will follow.

PS. (to Samsung) ... Market the Z Flip more like a space age power device and the choice of astronauts and not so much as fashion statement and make the carriers can sell a black one (and add a pen and an SD card lol) But at least fix the current "toy" camera thanks!
