Mission

Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield are the Army's world-class training, and military armored power projection combination on the eastern seaboard of the United States. This dynamic platform allows military units in the region to deploy rapidly throughout the world. The U.S. Army GarrisonFort Stewart is responsible for organizing, directing, coordinating and controlling garrison support and service activities, including overall management of the garrison workforce. The command is composed of numerous directorates and organizations responsible for the daily operation of Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. The garrison command provides support to assigned, attached and tenant units or activities to include on-post units and activities in the assigned geographic area.

History

Fort Stewart traces its history back to November 1940, when the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Training Center was officially designated as Camp Stewart, in honor of General Daniel Stewart, a native of Liberty County who fought with Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox) during the Revolution. Since then, Fort Stewart's size and strategic location led to important roles in our Nation's defense. On April 25, 1996, the 3d Infantry Division was activated at Fort Stewart. April2020 Census reports an estimated population of 8,821 personsliving on Fort Stewart. The population for Hinesville, the city outside the front gate, is estimated at 35,000 persons. Hinesville is located in Liberty County, Georgia with an estimated population of65,000 persons. Approximately 18,200 military retirees live within a 50 mile radius.

Location

Fort Stewart is located in Hinesville, a small, coastal Georgia town in Liberty County. The location allows for a close community setting,as well as, access to all the amenities of Historic Savannah, Georgia. Hinesville is a rustic setting nestled a short distance from the Atlantic Coastline and approximately 41 miles southwest of the city of Savannah. Fort Stewart is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River. It covers 279,270 acres, which include parts of six counties.Fort Stewart is easily accessible from Interstates 95 and 16.

Directions

Fort Stewart isserved by the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, airport code SAV.The airport features a rest area/information center for incoming military personnel.

  1. Leaving the airport, get on I-95 South to Fleming and continue 21 miles.
  2. Turn Right on GA-196 West for about 8.5 miles.
  3. Make a left onto US-84 West and continue about 4.5 miles.
  4. Make a right onto General Screven Way and continue for 3 miles.
  5. Arrive at Fort Stewart main gate.

Arrangements for transportation to Fort Stewart must be provided by Soldiers, by means ofcar rental, commercial taxi, oron-site shuttle services. Call the Replacement Detachment at 912-767-0115/0111/2690 or use the military phone at the airport to call directly to the 3D Infantry Division Replacement Detachment for transportation assistance.

From Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport to Fort Stewart, follow the signs from the airport to I-95 South.From I-95, take the exit for GA Hwy 144 (Fort Stewart and Richmond Hill). Turn right at the off-ramp stop sign, and stay on 144 through post. Follow the signs to the Marne Reception Center.

Fort Stewart is located about 41 miles southwest of Savannah and readily accessible by way of the major East Coast Highways (U.S.17, I-16 and I-95). The major highway passing through Hinesville is U.S. 84. The routes to Fort Stewart from the east and west edges of town are clearly marked on this road.

Traveling by Bus

Savannah (Hunter Army Airfield) and Hinesville (Fort Stewart) are served by Greyhound Bus Company. The bus stop is located 6118 Leroy Coffer Hwy., Fleming. Ga. To arrive at the main gate from the bus stop,turn righton Highway196 to Highway84 and follow the signs to Fort Stewart.

Traveling by Train

Savannah and Jesup are served by Amtrak Rail System. Jesup is about 40 miles from Fort Stewart. From Jesup go east on Highway 84 and follow the signs for Fort Stewart.

When You Get to the Gate

  • If you don’t have a Military ID: Report to the installation Visitor Control Center, a background check will need to be completed prior to entering installation.Everyone 18 years and older will need a government issued ID (such as drivers’ license or passport).
  • If you have a Dependent ID:No need to stop at the Visitor Control Center. You’re dependent military ID gets you on post without the need for a pass. Everyone over 18 in your car will need to show identification at the gate.
  • If you have a Military ID (CAC):Simply show your CAC to the MPs when you come to scan your CAC when you through. You will have to show identification for everyone in your car over 18 years of age.

Base Transportation

There is no on-post shuttle or bus. Taxicabs have access to post to drop off military I.D. Card holders. The Liberty Transit has a bus route with on-post stops. Passengers must have a military I.D. card to exit the bus while on-post.
